A Note from Our Staff
Even for locals, visiting a ramen shop for the first time can feel a little intimidating.

Where do you place your order? Is there a recommended way to eat the ramen? Do they accept cash only? Each shop has its own small rules and customs, and that can make people hesitate before going in.

Of course, you can still enjoy ramen without knowing these things. But wouldn’t it be more relaxing if you could visit with someone who knows the place well?

That’s exactly what this tour is for.
Overview
You've probably heard that Kyoto is one of Japan's best cities for ramen.

That's true.
The hard part is deciding where to go.
Beyond the famous chains are hundreds of independent ramen shops, each with its own style and story.
If you're ready to try something more local, I'd love to show you one of my favorites.

Hi, I'm Yama—most people know me as the Ramen King.

I've spent more than twenty years exploring Kyoto's ramen scene.
On this tour, I'll choose one independent shop that I think you'll love, based on your tastes.
Or, if you'd rather be surprised, you can simply leave the choice to me.

The chefs I introduce are passionate about every detail—from the cooking time of the noodles to the temperature of the broth.
They respect tradition while continuing to improve their craft with seasonal ingredients and new ideas.

I only recommend shops I've visited again and again—places where great ramen, warm hospitality, and genuine passion come together.

If you've ever felt nervous about ordering at a local ramen shop, don't worry.
I'll help with everything, from ticket machines and menus to the little house rules that first-time visitors often find confusing.

All you have to do is enjoy the bowl in front of you.

Guide: Yama

A Message from Yama
People often ask me,
"What's the best ramen shop in Kyoto?"
My answer is always the same.
"It depends."
There isn't one perfect ramen shop.
There is a perfect bowl for the right person.

Tell me what you enjoy, and I'll choose a shop that suits your taste.
Or, if you'd rather leave everything to me, I'm happy to do that too.
Along the way, I'll share what makes the shop special, introduce the chef behind the bowl, and point out the little details that many people never notice.

Nothing too serious.
Just enough to make your ramen taste even better.
I believe every bowl tells a story.
I'd love to share that story with you.

My Ramen Story

I fell in love with ramen as a student in Kyoto, and somehow... I never really stopped.

As the years went by, many of my friends slowly drifted away from ramen.
"I'm trying to eat healthier."
"Maybe ramen is a little too heavy these days."
I completely understood.
I just couldn't do it.
My excitement for ramen never faded.

More than twenty years later, I'm still exploring new shops with the same curiosity I had as a university student. Along the way, I've become friends with many ramen chefs—close enough that we sometimes travel together just to eat ramen.

Outside of ramen, I'm a graphic designer. Over the years, I've designed signs and websites for shops I admire, and somehow my favorite hobby became part of my work too.

For me, ramen has never been just a meal.
It's craftsmanship.
It's hospitality.
It's the people behind every bowl.

That's the Kyoto I'd love to share with you.

Tour Flow
Step 1:Meet Yama
We'll meet and talk ramen.
Rich and creamy? Light and clear? Spicy? Chicken? Pork?
Or maybe:
"I have absolutely no idea."
That's perfectly fine.

Tell me what you usually enjoy, and I'll choose a local ramen shop that matches your taste.
If you'd rather leave everything to me, I'm happy to do that too.
The goal is simple: one bowl you'll remember long after your trip.

Step 2:Head to the Shop
We'll take a pre-arranged taxi to the restaurant while chatting along the way.
I'll tell you a little about the shop we're visiting, what makes it special, and why I keep coming back. Feel free to ask me anything—ramen, Kyoto sightseeing, local food, or even where I would eat tomorrow if I weren't working.
Some of the best travel conversations happen on the way to lunch.

Step 3:Order & Enjoy
When we arrive, I'll help with everything.
Buying a meal ticket (if the shop uses one)
Reading the menu
Placing the order
Understanding any house rules unique to the restaurant

Many local ramen shops have their own customs, and first-time visitors often worry about making a mistake.
Don't worry. I'll be right there to guide you through it.

Once the ramen arrives, all that's left to do is enjoy it.
Take a sip of the broth, try the noodles, and experience the kind of Kyoto ramen that many visitors never find on their own.

Step 4:Until Next Time
After the meal, we'll head back toward the meeting point or a nearby major station.
If you have plans afterward, I can also help you continue to your next destination or arrange a convenient place to say goodbye.

By then, you'll have enjoyed more than just a bowl of ramen—you'll have discovered a little more of Kyoto through the eyes of a local ramen enthusiast.
