Creatures and traditional crafts nurtured in the waters of Kyoto’s rivers
Many large and small rivers flow through Kyoto, including the Kamogawa, Katsura, and Uji rivers, and the city has developed thanks to the blessings of these waters. Because of its history, Kyoto is also known as the city of water. In this plan, visitors can experience the nature and culture created by Kyoto, the city of water.
In the morning, visit the KYOTO AQUARIUM and meet the creatures that live in Kyoto's water. The KYOTO AQUARIUM recreates the rich natural environment of Kyoto's rivers and oceans, allowing visitors to learn about the ecosystem of living creatures in each environment they inhabit in an easy-to-understand manner. Of particular interest is the Japanese giant salamander, a species endemic to Japan and one of the largest amphibians in the world. The KYOTO AQUARIUM offers visitors the opportunity to closely observe these rare creatures, which are found only in parts of western Japan.
In the afternoon, you can experience Yuzen dyeing, a traditional craft closely related to Kyoto's pure water. Learn the vivid dyeing techniques that have been used for over 300 years and create your own unique pieces of artwork in the workshop, which is located in a renovated Kyoto “machiya” townhouse.
KYOTO AQUARIUM

The KYOTO AQUARIUM is operated under the theme of coexistence of life created by the blessings of Kyoto's nature and water, and allows visitors to observe a wide variety of creatures living in Kyoto's sea and rivers. Particularly noteworthy is the Japanese giant salamander, a national Special Natural Monument also known as a “living fossil” and “one of the largest amphibians in the world”. At the KYOTO AQUARIUM, visitors can closely observe the life and habits of these rare and mysterious creatures.
Furthermore, there is an area to observe sea creatures, including a large aquarium that recreates the sea of Kyoto where about 50 species of creatures are displayed, a 360-degree panoramic aquarium called “GURURI” where visitors can observe numerous water jellyfish, and a dolphin stadium with an open 180-degree panoramic view, allowing for many encounters in unique aquariums.
The KYOTO AQUARIUM is located in Umekoji Park, which is surrounded by forests and lawns, and is loved by locals as an oasis within the park. Chairs are provided in front of the aquariums so that visitors can sit back and relax while admiring the aquatic animals. Take a peek into the lives of these fascinating creatures in a relaxing and calm space.
