Create a unique, handmade souvenir to capture your Kyoto memories. This is a tour where you can experience making a Textile Frame Art at the workshop of "tsuzure-ori" weaving which is one of Kyoto’s most exquisite and highly regarded traditional textiles.

The experience begins with a visit to the workshop, where you will observe the beautiful craftsmanship of skilled artisans up close. Afterwards, you will select your preferred color from tens of thousands of threads and weave your own Textile Frame Art on a traditional loom. You are sure to find a color you will love.

Even first-time participants can feel at ease, as a skilled craftsman will provide careful support. The completed Textile Frame Art can be taken home as a keepsake of your trip.

The official name of tsuzure-ori is "Nishijin Tsumegaki Hon Tsuzure-ori". It is characterized by the traditional technique called "tsumegaki," where the weft threads are carefully pushed together using the fingertips to weave the patterns. Because it can create fine gradations and delicate shading, it has long been prized as tapestry and decorative art. As a "handcrafted work of art" that machines cannot replicate, it continues to be preserved and passed down in Nishijin, Kyoto to this day.
Instructor: Kikuo Hirano

Born in 1939 in Nishijin, Kyoto, Mr. Hirano was raised in a family of tsuzure-ori weavers spanning three generations. With over 40 years of experience perfecting his craft in the textile world, he has created numerous works of art.

His exceptional craftsmanship has earned him national recognition and honors, yet he remains incredibly approachable and warm-hearted. You will surely be captivated not only by his expert tsuzure-ori weaving skills, but also by his genuine character.

The workshop is now open to the public, offering an opportunity to experience the art of tsuzure-ori through tours and hands-on experiences. Learning directly from a master craftsman who remains active after so many years is a rare and invaluable opportunity.
Textile Frame Art Making Process

Step 1: Selecting Threads Choose 3 colors or more colors from among tens of thousands of threads that will be the main colors for your coaster. Based on your choices, the craftsman will suggest a unique combination of colors, including intermediate shades, to beautifully express the gradient, creating a one-of-a-kind color scheme just for you.

Step 2: Winding the Threads The selected threads are wound onto small spools to be used with the loom.

Step 3: Weaving Then, you will use the loom yourself to weave your Textile Frame Art. A skilled craftsman will be right beside you, carefully guiding you through each step and showing you how to create the beautiful gradations, so you can feel confident throughout the process.

Step 4: Finishing Touches & Completion Finally, the threads are secured, and your original Textile Frame Art is complete. You can take your finished piece home with you right away.
